Under The Radar
Robin Guthrie Continental

This track comes from Robin Guthrie’s second solo album ‘Continental’, that sneaked out in 2006. Guthrie is the guitarist from the Cocteau Twins, a band with an impeccable back catalogue. ‘Continental’ is pretty much instrumental and consistently good with a hazy feel throughout. We need more like this.

The Italian Connection

The Italian Connection - Part Two

Back in ’91 as well as getting into Soho to go shopping at the likes of Quaff, Trax and Black Market, we’d also bomb over to High Street Ken to Flying Records and to pop into Sign Of The Times to pick up a tape or two. Here’s one from back then. It’s all a bit Italian but now summers nearly here it sounds pretty good.

Dub Echoes

Dub Echoes

‘Dub Echoes’ is a new compilation and film recently released on the always good Soul Jazz Records. Everyone I know that has seen the film highly recommends so check the DVD if you have the opportunity. The CD brings together dub in it’s various forms from the traditional through to the futuristic sound of dubstep. Soul Jazz are quietly releasing so many nice bits at the moment, first their fine ‘Dancehall – The Rise Of Jamaican Culture’ book, then the ‘Steppa’s Delight’ comps and now the ‘Dub Echoes’ film by Bruno Natal and accompanying compilation. Respect.

Taken By Storm

The Mars Volta Sleeve

I like this post, it gives me an excuse to post the above image. Storm Thorgerson is a legend. As one of the people behind the legendary design company Hipgnosis, Thorgerson has created many classic record sleeves including work for Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel and The Mars Volta (above). This Saturday is the last weekend of his exhibition at the Oxo Gallery on the South Bank. The work on show is pretty special if you have even a passing interest in sleeve art and Storm himself was there when we went last weekend so aim for between 12 & 2 and take a gold pen and your copy of ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’. As my friend who is a graphic designer said when we were down there, ‘I just want to do one of these’.

The Oxo Gallery is at Oxo Tower Wharf, Bargehouse Street, South Bank, London SE1 9PH.

Expect Steve’s slow house vibes, some mellow sounds from Phil and some Island Records as it’s their 50th birthday. So, 5pm here if anyone fancies. We’ll try and upload the show soon.
