Love the New Order cover on this one. Brody playing Saville at his own game. So good piece on early casual culture here from July 1983 courtesy of Kevin Sampson and Dave Rimmer.

Jon Savage (in a not always complimentary fashion) on the world of appropriation in design from The Face in January 1983.

This one comes from The Face in November 1981 and is a great interview with celebrated graphic designer Barney Bubbles. If you are interested in reading more on Mr Bubbles there is a great book out that has recently been updated. Love the self portrait.

Classic buffalo spread from The Face in March 1985 with photography by Jamie Morgan and styling by the late Ray Petri. I’ll run the Warhol piece from this edition at a later date.

More Keith Haring here, this time from The Face in the mid-80s. Here he collaborates with Mario Testino (early in his career) on a fashion spread and a self-portrait. Wish there was more of this in the current times…

Great piece by David Toop from the December ’88 edition of The Face on the hose sound of New Jersey featuring interviews with Marshall Jefferson, Blaze, Larry Patterson, Jomanda, Phase II and Hippie Torales.

Anyone who has been reading Test Pressing for a while knows how much we love the work of Island Records. This piece comes from The Face in April ’84 and is about Jean Baptiste Mondino’s debut release for Island Records. Mondino, as most of you know, is the guy behind those iconic Grace Jones sleeves. I love that story about how when Badarou and all those guys turned up to Compass Point to make those early Grace Jones records that Chris Blackwell had pinned up the visuals Mondino had already made and said ‘we need the music to sound like that’. Anyway, shame Mondino didn’t make more music as it fits into our world perfectly. Love the video too.

Prince interview by Carol Cooper taken from The Face in June 1983. Great photo. Just watched the Omnibus program on him from ’91 and it’s pretty amazing stuff. Sheila E and a tour of his house. What more could you want.

Classic stuff here from Arena Homme + in Winter/Spring 09/10 covering the work of the late Ray Petri. Buffalo is perhaps one of the finest styles ever to come out of London and be associated with club culture. The mix of sportswear and the likes of Armani looked fresh at the time and still do now. It’s a classic look and if you want to read more, well look at more, there is a great book published by Westzone named ‘Buffalo – The Style & Fashion Of Ray Petri’ containing loads of his work.

This one comes from The Face in October 1982 and showcases a – one would assume – fresh faced Steve Proctor waxing lyrical about getting battered for the princely sum of £2.50 and dancing to the Clash and Grandmaster Flash. Stanleying coppers and having sex with your socks on also make brief appearances in this illuminating little time capsule.

Great piece from The Face in February ’83 on 69 Dean Street (aka Gossips). Somewhere half of us have probably been over the years.

Peter Nasmyth reports on ‘E’ for The Face in October 1985, taking in stories about The Ranch, a gay club in Dallas, where you could apparently get the drug over the counter for $20 plus $1.23 sales tax. If you had a coupon you got $5 off. It then got banned. Which leads you to think – surely banning something is the best way to tell a nation of people about something? Anyway, the hug drug was about to get known…

Taken from The Face, December 1989, Sheryl Garratt, this time with Lindsay Baker in tow, nails the scene at the time. Rave is still on but the small parties are showing the way forward for those with discerning taste.

Taken from The Face, November 1988. Love the language – ‘this could be a big noise’ and ‘massive bump since it was played at Hedonism 5’ etc. Top.

The Face: Shoom (June 1988)

December 31, 2009

Going out on a high for 2009, a sweet piece from The Face in June 1988. Sheryl Garratt nails Shoom in one paragraph. Top lady.

Some people love him some, people just don’t get it, but personally I think Prince is a genius. From proto-disco, influenced by the like of Laidback’s ‘White Horse’, to ‘Erotic City’ and the balearic beat of ‘Alphabet Street’, he’s had an influence on the dancefloor for many years. To go along with this article from Nick Kent in The Face from September 1988, I have uploaded the One Day Later Prince-productions-only mix from 2007 and couple of unreleased tracks, ‘Do Yourself A Favour’ and ‘Purple Music’, which show how good the music that remains unreleased is. Damn.
