The football’s on so it’s got a bit slow round these parts but here’s a mellow mellow moment from Eye Q’s sub-label Recycle Or Die. Well hippy.

Lovely track that I was reminded to dig out when I heard it recently on an old Jose Padilla tape. I’ll try and upload that at some point. Mr Marvin made some really interesting music for a while there.

This one goes out to all our friends in far away places. It’s the B side to ‘We Are Family’ and comes across like a slow version of ‘Thinking Of You’.

Lovely psychedelic rock from NYC produced by Sonic Boom. If you have £50 spare get a lathe cut 7″ here.

I was round the guys house that engineered the Bang The Party releases and we were going through his records. Within the standard genre sections (disco, funk, dub etc…) he had a further category for Murk. I liked that. Not really ‘Under The Radar’ but here’s my favourite Murk moment anyway.

Under The Radar

Yennek: Dancing Tides

Lovely uptempo Detroit track with a mellow edge from Kenny Larkin under his Yennek guise. When asked about the Yennek moniker Larkin replied, “”I don’t have any deeper meanings for this. You do without thinking; I just put the Kenney letters backwards.” (That actually doesn’t make sense as it would mean he can’s spell his own name but there we go… – Ed).

Nana Caymmi

Beautiful version of this lovely track originally written by Milton Nascimento taken from Nana Caymmi’s self-titled 1975 album on cid. Love the way it rolls in at the start.

They Call It An Accident

Produced by Chris Blackwell and released in 1983 on Island Records, the soundtrack to the film ‘They Call It An Accident’ is a slightly mixed bag but it does have two lovely Wally Badarou tracks and this, the instrumental ‘Main Theme’, written and performed by Steve Winwood.

Under The Radar

Thomas Leer: International

Found this one in a little shop in Chichester and it just ‘looked’ good. Made in ’84 it sounds perfect for now and has been the morning record in my house for a while. On the surface it seems quite pleasant but the song is basically about trafficking heroin (‘traveling across the world, selling it to boys and girls’). Seems like there’s lots of digging to be done into the world of Thomas Leer.

Under The Radar
Cul De Sac

Gun shots, country-style guitars and the Portland Cement Company are things that don’t normally go together, but for me, this works. The electronics are loud and hack in to the track so play with caution. Or don’t. Turn it up.

A R Kane 'Pop'

This track comes from A R Kane’s Rough Trade-released album, ‘i’. ‘Pop’ sounds like the Cocteau Twins meeting Arthur Russell in the ’89 melting pot that was. Not sure how under the radar it was really as they were pretty highly spoken of in the music press but it’s a great single.

Under The Radar
Robin Guthrie Continental

This track comes from Robin Guthrie’s second solo album ‘Continental’, that sneaked out in 2006. Guthrie is the guitarist from the Cocteau Twins, a band with an impeccable back catalogue. ‘Continental’ is pretty much instrumental and consistently good with a hazy feel throughout. We need more like this.
